What finally fixed the problem for me was going to the Intel website and downloading their latest drivers for the Intel WiLan adapter. Wireless VPN is now working fine but I think I may have sacrificed one or two of the ThinkVantage utilities for discovering and connecting to wireless networks. Not sure because I haven't tested everything. In any event, these ThinkVantage utilities don't seem to do anything that Vista can't do.
